Finally SKS in Hand
So get this, I finally had it with waiting for the permit. So I went into the local Police Station ready to raise hell. I forked over my receipt and demanded answers for the wait. Lady at the desk started barking off excuses and finally said let me go have a look. Turns out IT WAS READY in 7 days. Only they don't call you, send a letter, or notify you what so ever it is good to go. It is up to YOU to go in and get it without being notified its ready. :s15:
I wasted no time in going straight to the gun shop. Looked for about 3 minutes as some rednecks were talking to the guy about some sort of weird ammo. They kind of acted like know it alls and the guy kept saying he had no idea what they were talking about. After they were done I pointed to the SKS I wanted. Passed up the wood stock one I initially wanted because it was in rough shape. Pointed to this one and said I'LL TAKE IT. You should have seen the looks on the faces of those hillbillies when they saw a 20 year old something dressed like a hippie walk out with this thing. http://www.postimage.org/Pq1uPe0S.jpg http://www.postimage.org/Pq1uQ8o9.jpg Ok, so I know 30 round mags in an SKS are a no-no. I know next to nothing about the mods that were done. Anything I should look for? Everything seems to be in good working order. I only paid $250 so I think it should work out ok. I feel a little better knowing I can plug in a magazine and fire away. Where can I get more magazines like this one? Are these Mags interchangeable with an AK? I have heard the 30 round mags are prone to jamming when put in an SKS, lthough I don't see any dremel marks on the weapon so I don't know if it was ever intended to have a high capacity magazine or not. |
Re: Finally SKS in Hand
Looks Chinese with a Tapco folding stock. Find an arsenal marking "26" inside a triangle on the receiver. Is the barrel threaded or press-fit? Can't tell from the pix.
Something doesn't look right with the muzzle. There isn't enough barrel sticking out to hold the bayonet. Try to extend and lock the bayonet--see what happens. And no, AK mags won't work. Try USA mags. |
Re: Finally SKS in Hand
SKS and AK mags are not interchangeable without mods. Those steel SKS mags can be bought online or at that Cabelas in Rogers. Heard alot of good things about the Tapco polymer 20rd mags, but I didn't see them in store, probably have to order them online. Which shop did you go to get that SKS? 250 sounds like a pretty good price to me, assuming it's a russian or norinco.

Re: Finally SKS in Hand
Yeah the bayonet is for show only, there is no way you would not kill yourself by firing it in the up position. There is no place at the end of the barrel to lock it into. I have never seen that on an SKS before. Why in the world do they put that on there, someone could be killed with it not locking into place at the end of the barrel?
Anyway I am happy with it for now. It's my first rifle and it should do me good. I want to learn everything I can about it before I go plinking away with it. I believe it's definitely in used condition although the stock seems to be perfect for my height and arm length. I'm going to have to take this thing and clean it out good. It looks a little rough. |
Re: Finally SKS in Hand
I have heard that if that stock folds, they can nail you for some stupid law they have. Maybe they made the bayonet non functional in order to get away with the folding stock. It has been 20 years since I had one of these, so I dont know the rules anymore.

If you want to know just about anything regarding SKS's, go here:
http://www.sksboards.com/ Just be prepared to post a pic if you need to ask a question. Pretty much like any other gun board. Congrats on your purchase. I hope you enjoy it. |
Re: Finally SKS in Hand
I might be mistaken, it's been known to happen, but that sure looks like it has been converted to take regular AK-47 magazines. I can't totally tell without seeing the magazine separate from the rifle.

LOL you beat me to it. I just went to SKSboards and posted a question about what this is I have. I don't know about the clip it has me very nervous. It wiggles a little bit. For a while I didn't realize you had to pull back the charging handle and then insert the clip so it wouldn't fall out and that had me worried. Please let me know what to take pictures of to help identify this rifle I would be happy to post more. It says Made in China by Norinco and has serial numbers 087xx. |
Re: Finally SKS in Hand
Let me ask you this: have you removed the magazine yet? As long as it isn't loaded there's nothing to be nervous about. Also, a little wiggle is not unusual. The mags in my WASR-10 (AK-47 variant) wiggle a little side to side.
As for pics, just depress the button behind the magazine, then pull it out and take a side view pic of it. That will help identify if it is an aftermarket SKS higher capacity magazine or an AK mag. I saw your question at SKSboards. Keep checking on your post. You should get some good advice. When I'm not here on this board, I'm usually over at that one. |
Re: Finally SKS in Hand
I don't own an SKS so I'm not real familiar with them but I do believe that your gun has been converted to use AK mags.
The aftermarket SKS mags have a long protrusion that sticks out from the top of the mag toward the rear of the gun. Maybe 2 inches. The small mag release catch behind the mag looks similar to an AK mag release. Here is a 30 round SKS mag. http://www.surplusbunker.com/index.p...ead26ec3f94b72 Here is a 30 round AK mag http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...d.php?p=985304 |
Re: Finally SKS in Hand
Ok it's a go, I just posted this on SKSboards and waiting a reply from either site. What do you guys think of the new pics. I like this weapon as a first time buy, but if you guys think it's a pile I will take it back.

Re: Finally SKS in Hand
Oh sweet well the guys over at sksboards say it does indeed take AK-47 mags and should be a keeper. That sucks about the bayonet being all whack though. I am happy with it anyway. Anyone know where to get good ammo for it as well as cleaning rods, etc? Also is this clip original to the weapon and is this a model M or what?

Re: Finally SKS in Hand
If you live in commiefornia you should ditch that stock forthwith and button them lips. Otherwise have fun, you have an "assault weapon" by cali laws
|
Re: Finally SKS in Hand
Yeah, yours takes regular AK magazines. If you only paid $250 I'd say keep it. If the bayonet doesn't function correctly, I recommend just having it removed. You can probably do it yourself (with some online tutorial) or have a gunsmith do it for you.
As for ammo, this should fire just about any 7.62x39. You might want to watch out for the Remington 7.62 like you get at Walmart, though. These have soft primers which may not function effectively. IIRC, this gun's firing pin was designed for hard primers (think military surplus ammo, Wolf black box or military classic, Brown Bear, Barnaul, along those lines). Check out this website to gateway you to some good deals: http://gun-deals.com/ammo As for cleaning rods or any other parts and accessories, just do some Googling. You're sure to find just about anything you need. |
Re: Finally SKS in Hand
The problem with soft primers is that the firing pin is floating and will carry forward and strike the cartridge when the bolt is closed. A hard primer will show a very small dent as a result. A soft primer carries a real chance of discharging.

Congrats on the SKS ! :coolbeer:
You'll luv it.......and NO the mags don't interchange with AK's. |
Re: Finally SKS in Hand
It looks to me that the front sight "shroud" isn't on all the way. When I bought my SKS, it didn't come with the front sight so I ordered one from www.sksman.com and put it on (Can you say major pain in the balls???). But the barrel end should be sticking out just enough for the bayonet to lock on to it.
Its ability to take AK mags is a major plus. But, the thing that sucks about it is that in addition to losing functionality of the bayonet, you also cannot stick a muzzle brake on it. I personally would rather have the muzzle brake as I thought it improved my shot pattern. |
Re: Finally SKS in Hand
The bayonet still makes a good monopod.

Also the 30rd mag is indeed an AK mag and a somewhat uncommon one too. It is an all-stamped Chinese type. Since this rifle has a 20 inch barrel I belive you have an SKS-D model. |
Re: Finally SKS in Hand
Wow, an AK without the rip-off price tag !
